Preschool Letter X

Preschool Letter X (Throughout this Preschool Letter X post, click the hyperlinked text to take you to the complete unit in my TpT store/original resource link, or click the pictures to get the freebies!) Letter X… Is it OK if I don’t like this letter? I mean, besides “x-ray”, are there any words that begin with the “x” sound? It is an impossible letter to teach, unless you teach it as an ending sound, or teach its 2 sounds from the beginning… which we are not. Anywho, here’s what we did on our single day of Preschool Letter X! We started with a Letter Find page. And moved on to our CVC word work page. (Just in case you’re wondering, Filip DID ask why all the Xs are at the end of the words!) We also did a CVC word building activity. In the past, I usually kept the words intact and Filip just glued them on whole. This time, I asked my little man to cut out each letter to see whether he could sequence the letters correctly as he really struggles with this when writing. But he did really well! We finished the day off with a letter craft: X for Xylophone and x for x-ray. Sunday School Adam and Eve

Sunday School Adam and Eve This week, we started our lesson by talking about rules. We all agreed that, at times, rules are annoying because we can’t do what we want, but, they help to keep us and others safe. We went through our Sunday School rules and talked about how each one keeps us or others safe and what the natural consequences would be if we broke a specific rule as well as the punishment that might be dished out by teachers if one continues to break the rules. We didn’t get to play our “Obey the Signs” game as we left it until the end of the lesson and ran out of time! (Note for next year: play a short game at the START of lesson!) However, it is a fantastic game for helping kiddos to understand the importance of obeying rules. To play this game, have children line up in front of you. Stand on the opposite side of the room and call out, “Go!” or “Stop!” When you say GO, the children move towards you. When you say STOP, they must stop. The first child to reach you wins. A child must go back to the starting point if they continue to move forward once you’ve called “Stop!” (You could also play this as a “Musical Statues” game, substituting the music for the signs.) Once the game is finished, ask the children some questions, such as: How can you tell who wins? Quite evidently, the person who followed the rules AND got to the teacher first. What are the consequences of not playing by the rules? Going back to the starting point and possibly giving up your chances of winning! We then talked about the man God had created – Adam. God made a beautiful garden for Adam called Eden and his job was to look after the plants and animals. However, Adam felt lonely because he didn’t have a friend. So God, made a woman and Adam named her Eve! She was the perfect friend for Adam. They both lived in the beautiful garden and were very happy. God told them to eat the fruit from any tree in the garden EXCEPT the one that was in the middle of the garden. God gave them a rule. To help with the retelling of what happened in the garden, I made a a story box. The clip art I used is available for purchase from Kari Bolt’s store. Preschool Letter W

Let me begin by saying, “Wow!” I can’t believe that we are almost done with our Letter of the Week! Between you and I, I’ll admit that I can’t wait to move beyond the alphabet and actually start to READ! I am planning on mixing phonics with sight words when we begin reading, but we’ll talk about that a bit later! So! Here it is: Letter W. I know you already know this… Yep. We started with our letter W play dough mat. Filip used some small gems this week. We then identified lower and upper case W with our Alphabet Letter find page. Next, we worked on beginning W sounds. Then Filip practiced writing upper and lower case W with our Alphabet Write and Wipe cards. We started Day 2 with an upper and lower case W maze. Then Filip did a CVC work work page. Have I mentioned how much he loves these pages? I think it’s because he feels like a big kid reading all those words on his “worksheet”. In case you didn’t know this, my lil’ man absolutely LOVES worksheets. We read a few more words with our beginning W CVC Word Slider cards. Then put together some beginning W CVC Puzzles. And practiced sounding out and writing beginning W CVC words with our Phoneme Segmentation cards. Sunday School Creation: Day 6, Man and Day 7, Day of Rest

This week, we summarised all the God had created. Since we hadn’t talked about the creation of the first man, Adam, the previous week, we talked about him now. I had planned to take in some play dough and show my kiddos how God formed Adam ever so carefully, but I don’t know how it happened that I didn’t end up taking any to class with me. Oh well. So, we had to use our imaginations and imagined how God formed Adam from the dust and then breathed life into him. It was not nearly as fun as the play dough, but my little dears went along with it! We also read from our Creation story book to find out what God did on Day 7. We spent a good few minutes talking about God’s rest. We decided that God did not necessarily sleep on Day 7. Most likely, God rested from creating and spent time admiring His creation. I asked my kiddos what they usually do after they have made something really cool with Lego, or have done an awesome craft. Do they just keep on making things out of Lego, or keep crafting, or do they take a break to admire their work… and, perhaps, even play with their creations? Well, after God created Adam, God wanted to talk to Adam. He was, after all, the most magnificent of all God’s creations. My kiddos could totally relate to that one 😉 Next, inspired by Hands Bible Teacher’s post, I introduced the Creation Week sensory mini tub pack I made for my dears. I filled each mini tub with something to represent what was created on each day. I also made a Days of Creation printable that I put on the bottom of each tub. Needless to say, this was the highlight of the day and the kiddos ALL wanted to have a turn ordering the tubs. And we also played a matching game, which the younger kids enjoyed a great deal. (The pictures below are on the reverse-side of the numbers pictured above.) We coloured an Adam puppet to remind us that, on Day 6, God also created the first man and then the next day, on God’s day of rest, God talked to Adam. Once the children had finished their craft, we also played a sorting game to show the things what were created by God and the things that were created by man. Sunday School Creation: Day 6 Animals

As in previous sessions, I brought out our sensory bottles and we talked about what God had created on each day. I brought out the Day 6 sensory bottle and I asked my kiddos to guess what God had created on this particular day. No, not the grass, nor the flowers… yes! That’s right! Puppies and cats and giraffes and all the other animals! We checked our Creation story book to make sure that we had gotten that right. Sure enough, we were right; what a clever bunch we are! 😉 We spoke about big and small animals and then we tried to make the sounds our favourite animals made. And then we played a sorting game. We sorted the animals from the insects. Am I right to assume that insects were created on this day? (Please point out the obvious to me so I know to change it for next year if I’m wrong!!) My munchkins love our sorting games and have come to expect them for each lesson! Then I held up some pre-cut animals masks: monkeys and lions and bears and puppies! Oh my! They all jumped and down with excitement!  I got the free printable masks from First Pallette. Here is my lil’ Filip… yes, he’s in my Sunday School class 🙂 My dears are all at different levels with the colouring and fine motor development. That means that some will finish quickly, while others will need help to complete their colouring. I usually allow the early finishers the possibility to play with the Creation sensory bottles or to start on their Take Home page. Today, I decided to make this: They totally LOVED the sensory animal tub! Of course, my dears that were still colouring wanted to see what all the fuss was about… I’m so glad I decided to take a photo BEFORE and not DURING or AFTER as you would not have been able to tell what it was meant to be! Of course, I handed out some Take Home pages to my dears too.
