Summer Literacy Centers for Kindergarten

This book contains a collection of games and activities intended for use in centers and small groups with children in Kindergarten (Prep). Each activity includes a center label that can be printed and placed on the front of your storage device. Also included are “I can” center instructions to help children remember what to do. I have included a recording page at the end of each activity in order to have evidence of each child’s work. Summer write & wipe alphabetTo prepare the cards for use in a write and wipe center, print, laminate them, and then cut them apart. The intention of this activity is for children to practice correct letter formation with a dry-erase marker. The cards can be kept in a book-like format by making a hole in the top left corner and securing together with a key ring or a pipe-cleaner. Summer clip the syllablesTo prepare this activity for use, print the cards, laminate them and then cut them apart. Household pegs, or other small clipping items such as unused hair clips or paper clips, can be used for this activity. The aim is for children to identify the number of syllables in each word and clip the circle with the correct answer. Flip flops upper and lower case letter matchTo prepare this activity for use, print the cards, laminate them and then cut them apart. The aim is for children to find the two flip flops that make an upper and lower case letter match. Sunglasses beginning sounds matchTo prepare this activity for use, print the cards, laminate them and then cut them apart. The aim is for children to find the two sunglasses halves that make a letter and beginning sound match. Summer clip the beginning digraphPrint, laminate and cut out the picture cards. The aim of this activity is for children to correctly identify the beginning digraph for each picture and to clip a clothes peg to show their answer. Alternatively, children can use dry-erase markers to color the correct beginning digraph. Missing middle sounds (CVC words)You will need to supply children will Scrabble letter tiles or other small letters for this activity. The intention of this activity is for children to practice correct number formation with a dry-erase marker. The cards can be kept in a book-like format by punching a hole in the top left corner and securing the cards together with a key ring or a pipe-cleaner. Summer count and write (teen numbers)To prepare the cards for use in a write and wipe center, print, laminate them, and then cut them apart. The aim of this activity is for children to count the items on the card and write their answer in the circle provided. Summer missing numbers number lines (1-10 and 11-20)For this activity, you have the option of using the number circles included in the unit or you may supply your own. To prepare for use, print the pages, laminate them for durability and then cut along the dashed lines. Glue the number circles onto the end of household clothes pegs. The aim is for children to identify the missing numbers and place the correct circles in the empty spaces to complete the number sequence. Using a hole puncher, children are required to punch out the indicated picture. June cutting practice (8 cards)SUPPLIES NEEDED: scissorsTo prepare the activity for use, print (on colored paper) and then cut along the dashed lines. Using a pair of scissors, children are required to cut along the dashed lines. June dab the mystery picture (5 pages)SUPPLIES NEEDED: dab/dot painting markers or colored circle stickersTo prepare the activity for use simply print the pages you wish to use. Using the indicated colored dab/dot painting markers, children paint the circles the reveal the hidden picture. Alternatively, children can use colored circle stickers.
